Employment contracts are typically subject to review and renewal on an annual basis. Entry level position to the UNM Office of University Counsel for an attorney with up to 7 years of relevant experience. The position will involve extensive legal research in a broad range of state and federal laws and the drafting of legal memoranda, contracts, pleadings and policies under the supervision of a more senior attorney.
Under general direction and with supervision by a more senior attorney, the attorney occupying this position provides legal counsel to the University administration relating to employment, human resources, labor relations, civil rights and tort liability and represents the University administration in employee and faculty appeals, grievances and union matters. Member of NM State Bar, or member in good standing of the State Bar of another state or District of Columbia.
Successful candidate who is not a member of the NM State Bar is required to obtain a temporary Public Employee Limited License issued by the NM Supreme Court and then become a member of the NM State Bar no later than 1 year after being hired. Preferred QualificationsExperience working in a complex organization with multiple constituencies. â" Strong skills in legal research and legal writing â" Strong skills in analyzing complex statutory and regulatory laws. â" Knowledge of contract and policy review and drafting.
â" Knowledge of the statutory and regulatory framework in which a University operates. â" Knowledge of employment law and litigation, employmentâ"related federal and state statutes and regulations, labor law and labor relations including contract enforcement proceedings, civil rights law and litigation, and tort law. â" Knowledge of general litigation. â" Ability to provide accurate, timely, through and wellâ"reasoned legal advice regarding the substantive areas of law.
â" Ability to work well with clients and within a corporate culture, and to respect and reconcile multiple interests and/or dimensions relating to policy.
