Sandia National Laboratories is searching for a General Law Counsel for the Infrastructure Support Practice Group ! (ISPG) team located in our Albuquerque, NM facility. This position is a permanent, full-time opportunity. The candidate selected in this position is required to obtain and maintain a DOE-granted âL-levelâ security clearance. Security clearance is required to start.
The candidate selected will provide day-to-day legal support and advice to management and subject matter experts on issues associated with an Occupational Medicine organization, e.g., health screening and surveillance, health policies; as well as legal support and advice regarding a number of health law related issues and regulations that apply generally to a DOE facility, including exposure, human subjects research issues, emergency management and incident response, transportation, workplace violence, and licensure/registration issues. Additionally, the candidate will advise on ERISA primarily as it applies to welfare plans, including HIPAA privacy and security, and on additional corporate legal sub! ject matter areas as assigned by Legal Division management. Su! ccessful candidate will counsel and assist management and employees on application of international, federal, state laws, regulations, US DOE contract compliance, and corporate policies or procedures; interpret and prepare legal documents; interact with and manage outside counsel on litigation, administrative agency hearings and general matters; interact with clients, local, state, and federal authorities; conduct complex investigations, advise management on complex projects and legal matters in order to anticipate, identify, and protect the corporation against legal liability.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Licensed to practice law in at least one state.
- Experience practicing law as a licensed attorney.
- Understanding of general corporate matters and ability to draft transactional documents.
- Demonstrated experience in one or more area of law such as environmental compliance and protection, labor relations, employment law, immi! gration law, data privacy, contract management, and/or litigation and claims.
- Requires good oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills.
- Knowledge of the tools of and sources for legal research and the ability to devise and implement coherent and effective legal research.
- Skill in and knowledge of the concepts and processes involved in preparing for negotiations, conducting negotiations, and counseling a client regarding developments and options in a negotiation.
- Knowledge of the rules governing the practice of law, the ability to recognize and resolve ethical issues, and strict adherence to the rules of professional conduct, and confidentiality rules.
- Knowledge of software applications and technologies used in a technologically sophisticated law office.
- Ability to deliver legal advice and counsel in context of Sandia strategic mission and business objectives.
- In responding to specific request! for legal advice, ability to identify other existing legal vulnerabili! ties and business impacts beyond the scope of the request.
- Ability to learn new areas of law, takes on other duties as assigned, and demonstrates flexibility.
- Ability to work independently as appropriate.
- Requires a Law degree plus 3 to 7 years of relevant legal experience.
- Must be flexible and willing to learn and advise in other general law subject matter areas as needed, such as environmental, information management, contracts, litigation.
- Must be a member of a state bar in good standing.
- Experience in advising and representing corporate employers, either in private practice or as a member of a corporate legal department.
- Member of the State Bar of New Mexico.
