Department Description The Dynamic Materials Properties Department at Sandia National Laboratories (Department 1646) performs experimental measurements of dynamic material properties at high pressures, including material39s equations of state, phase boundaries, and constitutive properties.
Experiments are performed with a variety of drivers, from high velocity gas guns to the most powerful pulsed-power facility in the world, the 26 million ampere Z facility. The focus of the department is dynamic material properties experiments using both high-pressure shock waves and shockless compression. A particularly exciting area of emerging interest is! the study of material properties in regions of phase space th! at are both off-Hugoniot and off the principal isentrope. The department is responsible for designing, executing, diagnosing, and analyzing dynamic materials properties experiments on the Z facility, and at Sandia National Laboratories39 DICE and STAR facilities.

Job Description Manager, RD Science and E MG Job Summary The High Energy Density Material Physics group (1640) has an opening for a Manager to lead the experimental application of our pulsed power science facilities to important high pressure and temperature material property problems for national security. The present focus of this research effort is to develop experimental platforms (from gas guns to the Z facility) to address a multitude of material property research elements for programs within NNSA. To ! fulfill this role, the Manager will be accountable for (1) providing leadership and coordination of the department39s research activities (2) insuring close coupling with the theoretical and facility departments in 1640 (3) working closely with facility and diagnostic development organizations to assure safe and effective experimental activities (4) helping integrate the group39s research in these areas with other Centers at Sandia and with other laboratories within the National program (5) optimizing the capability of the Z facility for dynamic material property research in partnership with other groups in Center 1600 The 1646 manager will participate in management of the NNSA Science Campaign Dynamic Materials and Advanced Certification Programs.
Externally, the successful candidate will be a visible advocate of Sandia39s existing programs in the national and international communities develop new national security and basic science programs that utilize Sandia39s! unique capabilities in dynamic material properties and develop and man! age relationships with our customers, other national laboratories, universities, and industry. Internally, the successful candidate will work with the Group manager to meet our programmatic milestones. Primary Job Duties Guides the work of the department. Required (1) PhD plus 5 or more years of relevant experience in material science, physics, engineering, or a closely associated technical field. (2) A technical competency relating to experimentation in at least one of the following areas as demonstrated through publications in refereed journals experimental physics, material science, solid mechanics, shock physics, pulsed power, high energy density physics, or advanced diagnostics. A demonstrated history of technical innovation and leading! cutting edge research. (3) A working knowledge of the requirements for material properties that are important for the stockpile stewardship and stockpile modernization programs (4) Experience with and commitment to excellence in formality of operations associated with high-risk facilities such as high-voltage systems and gas guns (5) A demonstrated history of technical innovation and leading cutting edge research.
(6) Capabilities generally required at the level of a manager, including (a) strong team leadership and management skills (b) consistent, sound judgment in the management of projects (c) the ability to articulate a clear vision and objectives for an organization and (d) effective written and oral communication skills, as described in the Full Spectrum Leadership model. Desired (1) A sound working knowledge of National Security programs, including experience with DOE and National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) defense programs, as well as their ov! ersight agencies (2) A sound working knowledge of Sandia39s Directed St! ockpile Work (DSW) programs, particularly regarding requirements for material properties to support qualification programs (3) A nationalinternational reputation in the candidate39s technical area of expertise (4) Broad knowledge of physical science activities in other agencies (5) Demonstrated ability to develop collaborations with external organizations, and demonstrated success in advancing an organization39s influence in issues of national importance in an environment of strong technical competition and limited funding (6) Background in the following shock physics, constitutive properties, high energy density physics, non-ideal plasmas, equations of state, warm dense matter, pulsed power, or inertial confinement fusion.
