This position is a Pay Band 75.

Occupation Description Represent clients in criminal and civil litigation and other legal proceedings, draw up legal documents and manage or advise clients on legal transactions. May specialize in a single area or may practice broadly in many areas of law. Nature of Work Lawyers serve as both advocates and advisers. As advocates, they speak for their clients in court by presenting supportive evidence. As advisers, they counsel their clients on their legal rights and obligations. Lawyers interpret laws, apply laws to specific situations, and draft new laws.Much of their work involves researching precedents, which are earlier interpretations of laws and the history of judicial decisions based on that law. Lawyers use precedents to support their cases in court. Many resources from law libraries and public documents to computer databases and the Internet are available to lawyers for research. Criminal lawyers are hired by people facing prosecution for crimes. Public defenders are employed by the government to represent people who cannot afford to pay lawyers.Some lawyers handle only civil cases, which do not involve criminal misconduct. Labor law concerns disputes between management and unionized workers, while patent law concerns disputes over the rights to inventions. Employees draft, evaluate, and review pleadings and appellate briefs, opinions, correspondence, proposed legislation and regulations, and other documents; negotiate contracts; coordinate and conduct discovery and interview witnesses; interact extensively with private entities and all levels of government including legislators; assist in developing and implementing strategic plans in accordance with agency mission; routinely advise senior management and executives on legal and management issues; instruct and provide direction to lower level lawyers, paralegals, and support staff as needed. Employees may conduct hearings of intermediate to high complexity following constitutional, statutory and regulatory requirements; write recommended or final decisions determining relevant facts and applying relevant law and regulations .

Minimum Qualifications:
Juris Doctorate Degree from an accredited school of law and three (3) years of experience in the practice of law. Employment Requirements: Must posses a current license as an attorney issued by the Supreme Court of New Mexico. Must maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License and must have own mode of transportation for daily travel. Some statewide travel is required. Employment is subject to a p re-employment background investigation and is conditional pending results . Statutory Requirements: Licensed as an attorney by the Supreme Court of New Mexico or qualified to apply for limited practice license, which requires graduation from an accredited school of law, licensure (in good standing) in another state and sitting for the next eligible State Bar exam.
