Harborview Medical Center's Environmental Services has an outstanding opportunity for a
Full Time Day Shift PROGRAM OPERATIONS SPECIALIST. Reporting to the Harborview (HMC) Director of Environmental Services (EVS), the Program Operations Specialist is responsible for the coordination, implementation, and education of infection prevention and related patient safety practices across Harborview Medical Center in conjunction with other Infection Control and Quality Assurance/Quality Improvement (QA/QI) departments across UW Medicine. This position will focus on infection prevention as it pertains to staff members within the Emergency Department, Operating Rooms, and general patient rooms in clinics across the hospital. This position will conduct patient interviews for Environmental Services, Engineering, and Food Services. The goal of the position is to ensure rooms are being cleaned properly as per Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines and recommendations. In order to achieve this goal, this individual will focus on training and educating new staff members and continuing education for existing staff members. This position will be responsible for a program that evaluates cleaning and infection control functions for Environmental Services and will collaborate with supervisors on training/educating over 200 EVS staff members, in addition to a diverse group of members within the Engineering and Food Services departments.
Job Responsibilities:
Infection Prevention Testing & Protocol Implementation – 45%
Conducts inspections/rounds in hospital rooms to collect data
Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) / Glow germ
Multidrug-resistant organisms such as MRSA, VRE, etc.
Healthcare-associated?infections (HAI)
Respiratory pathogens (e.g. Tuberculosis and influenza)
Inspect rooms before and after custodial staff cleaning
Investigates incidents of infection and reports such incidents to appropriate leaders
Ensures availability of supplies required for Environmental Services
Evaluates equipment, supplies, and waste disposal methods
Provides assistance/oversight of the Hand Hygiene Observation program within the department and custodial staff
Conducts rounds/inspections throughout the hospital
includes formal Environment of Care rounding and associated assignments
Collects and validates data
Facilitates the operation of the hospital Infection Prevention protocols and supports continuous quality improvement by suggesting new policies and procedures that could reduce the spread of infections
Develops departmental policies and procedures that support key infection prevention and control functions in conjunction with other Infection Prevention departments
Maintains current knowledge of CDC guidelines and recommendations for infection prevention/control and definitions of health care associated infections
Develops and enforces effectual policies and procedures for the department that ensures compliance with The Joint Commission (JCAHO), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), CDC, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and other county, state, and federal regulatory agencies
Training and Education – 15%
Create procedures and task lists for orientation of custodians as it pertains to infection prevention in accordance with existing policies/protocols. Procedures will focus on infection prevention, hand hygiene compliance, and chemical usage
Collaborate with supervisors and training leads to create and implement training curriculum
Provide Infection Prevention Orientation to department staff
Consult with managers in clinical and non-clinical areas to determine educational needs. When necessary, provide education and orientation to other department staff
Interact with department leaders to provide resource information, strategize infection control prevention measures, resolve issues, and identify policies for improvement
As the liaison between the department and other Infection Prevention departments across the hospital, they will maintain knowledge of current policies/procedures
Collaborates with HR and Employee Health Staff to ensure the department is compliant with employee health requirements
Project Management – 10%
Design, develop, and prioritize department projects
Department Supply Ordering– 10%
Order supplies for EVS department
Conduct trials of new supplies and equipment
Update and maintain department supply catalogs
Patient Interviews – 10%
During rounds/infection prevention inspections, conduct interviews with patients and family members about the cleanliness of patient rooms and general hospital areas, the staff members, and the functionality of the equipment
Round with patients, visitors, and/or stakeholders daily
Field patient complaints and provide feedback to appropriate staff members or submit work orders when appropriate
Maintain and manage patient interview data to report and analyze issues and trends
Infection Data Maintenance – 5%
Collect infection data from inspections and department leaders
Calculates infection rates using the CDC’s recommended denominator data
Maintain data/records for data analysis and reporting. Data includes elements such as, how many patients contracted infections, ATP meter numbers, etc.
Maintain and manage data in database, create new tracking methods for improved reporting and analysis
Audit existing records for accuracy
Prepare data for reporting to Infection Control and QA/QI departments and hospital leaders, as well as for external communication
Review quality and safety indicators to facilitate implementation of continuous improvement
Other – 5%
Support other EVS department projects and functions as needed.
Represent the EVS department during any Patient Safety, Quality Assurance, and/or Infection Prevention & Control committees and work groups
Review and provide improvement suggestions on EVS/Custodian policies, procedures,?orientation/training,?etc.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Business Administration or related field or four years of experience in a leadership role in healthcare or a healthcare related field
Experience working with healthcare data to report on improvements and trends (e.g. patient surveys or infection control data) for benchmarking
Experience with clinical or healthcare quality improvement initiatives
Familiarity with quality improvement methods and tools
DESIRED:
Experience with data analysis
Experience with training and orienting staff members
