Kirtland Air Force Base, New Mexico, in Southeast Albuquerque, is nestled between the Sandia and Manzano mountain ranges. It is home to the Air Force Material Command's Nuclear Weapons Center and its subordinate wings. It is also home to the Directed Energy and Space Vehicle Directorates of the Air Force Research Laboratory.
A list of eligible candidates is being established and may be used to fill multiple vacancies for a period of 12 months (or more). Types of appointments may include: Full time permanent positions; OR full time term positions Not-to-Exceed 13 months, with extension possible; OR full time temporary positions not to exceed 1 year, with a 1 year extension possible. Term and Temporary appointments made from this register may be converted to permanent without further competition.

As a Medical Financial Assistant, GS-0506-06, you will be responsible to collect from third party payers the cost of medical services provided to DoD beneficiaries and management of the Medical Affirmative Claims Program. You will also:
- Ensure daily injury reports, emergency reports, admissions and dispositions reports are received from the clinics and are forwarded to the 377 ABW Staff Judge Advocate (SJA).
- Receive and file source documents (DD Form 2569, Third Party Collection Program - Insurance Information) of patients having third party insurance and receiving treatment at any of the 377th Medical Group outpatient clinics.
- Audit insurance information from the Ambulatory Data System (KG-ADS) and from the Composite Health Care System (CHCS) correcting any database discrepancies. Contacts patients and/or sponsors when additional information is required.
- Utilize all available sources and resources to ensure maximum identification of billable entities.
- Provide headquarters with a quarterly report, which reflects Third Party Collection (TPC) activities.
- Receive Explanation of Benefits and processes documentation related to payments, post payments, and writes off codes for non-payment in Third Party Outpatient Collection System (TPOCS).

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE
:
Applicants must possess one year of specialized experience at the next lower grade (GS-05) qualifying pay band, equivalent or other pay systems. Equivalent experience may be at the next lower grade, however, the experience must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to successfully perform the duties of the position being filled.
Specialized Experience
at the GS-05 level is described as the ability to bill and collect from health insurance companies for outpatient care provided to dependents, retirees, and dependents of retirees when those patients are covered by health insurance plans other than Tricare or Medicare. Perform registration of patients in the Defense Eligibility Enrollment Reporting System (DEERS), and the Composite Health Care System (CHCS) for use in monitoring, tracking, and reporting care received with the military treatment facility. Screen and verify insurance information through auditing of information in the CHCS with the ability to correct any database discrepancies.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas as reported on your résumé:
1. Knowledge of insurance claims procedures to process claim and deal effectively with insurance carrier representatives in settling claims.
2. Knowledge of medical terminology and medical recordkeeping in order to extract information pertinent to bills being submitted for payment on the ub-92 or hcfa 1500, health insurance claim form.
3. Knowledge of current procedural terminology (cpt), international classification of diseases, ninth revision clinical modification (icd-9cm) insurance billing codes.
4. Knowledge of medical terminology, billing processes and documents as they relate to accounts payable/receivable ledgers and claim forms.
5. Thorough knowledge and understanding of computer office automation to include ms office, chcs, kg-ads, tpocs, access and the internet. Ability to generate reports and to input, update and make corrective entries in automated systems.
