Under the direction of the County Attorney and Deputy County Attorney, serve as legal counsel for Board of Co! unty Commissioners, County management and other elected officials.
Duties and Responsibilities
Act as a legal counsel for the County, working with elected officials and County management who require legal advice or representation.
Draft or review ordinances, resolutions, contracts, administrative policies, rules and regulations and other documents required in the operation of County government to ensure compliance with legal requirements.
Draft documents required for the operation of County government, and for matters pending before courts, quasi-judicial and other administrative bodies.
Conduct legal research.
Prepare legal opinions in regard to the status of statutory law and the common law as well as administrative practices at the behest of the County Attorney.
Represent the Board of County Commissioners, County management and/or designated clients, as assigned, in state and federal courts and quasi-judicial or admini! strative bodies.
Provide legal advice, including matt! ers pertaining to employment, labor and land use law, to various departments of County government, as requested.
Work with attorneys in the Legal Department, opposing counsel and members of the public in a collegial and professional manner.
Supervise or direct the work of other outside counsel or contract counsel as assigned.

Requires a J.D. or L.L.B. degree from an accredited academic institution with a valid license to practice law in the State of New Mexico.
Demonstrated âgood standingâ with the New Mexico State Supreme Court.
Five (5) years experience in t! he practice of law which includes litigation, appellate experience, and the coordination of multiple assignments relating to litigation and advising clients on issues of legal compliance.
Knowledge of law and concepts relevant to the operation of County government.
Ability to interact professionally with elected officials, the judiciary, clients, co-workers, opposing counsel and members of the public.
Ability to maintain regular attendance.
Ability to communicate effectively in both written and oral English.

Working Conditions
Indoor duties are performed in a temperatu! re-controlled environment.
Indoor duties are typically performed on an even and dry surface, which may be carpeted or tile.
Most duties are performed alone. May perform certain duties as part of a select team of individuals .
Equipment, Tools and Materials
Equipment used in performing duties includes: computer, telephone, calculator, facsimile machine, and photocopy machine.
Materials and products handled in performance of duties include: various documents, writing utensils and an assortment of office supplies and equipment.

Must be able to use hands and fingers in order to grasp/manipulate various equipment and materials needed to perform essential duties.
