Under general direction of the Juvenile Detention Director, will perform a variety of professional nursing duties at the Juvenile Detention Center. Respon! sible for the direct over-sight of the daily nursing duties of the medical and community mental health clinic.
Duties and Responsibilities
Supervise personnel, which typically includes recommendations for hiring, training, work allocation, problem resolution and performance evaluations.
Responsible for budget maintenance, statistical reports, requests for capital outlay and maintain employee and procurement files.
Ensure adequate care and treatment of all residents.
Schedule and perform daily sick call for residents.
Administer prescribed medications and treatments according to approved nursing techniques and physician's orders.
Maintain all documentation on licenses, pharmaceutical and laboratory protocol, clinic and other health maintenance records.
Advise staff on the medical/mental conditions and/or special requirements of individual juvenile residents.
Provide first aid and medical care in cases of ! emergency.
Determine when to call physician and assis! t physician with examinations of patients.
Perform daily treatments, blood draws and/or injections as ordered by physician.
Promotes a healthcare environment that is adequate for residents, medical personnel and staff.
Facilitate communication with outside agencies to coordinate services as needed.
Perform other job related duties as directed or assigned.

Graduation from an accredited school of nursing and licensed by the State of New Mexico as a registered nurse. Bachelor's Degree in Nursing desirable.
Five (5) years experience in a hospital or pub! lic health facility. A background in emergency room/adolescent psychiatric/family practice desirable with an additional year involving the supervision of other nursing personnel.
Must have knowledge of professional nursing principles and practices relating to adolescent growth and development; of psychiatric nursing skills/practices; techniques of detection of drug overdose and abuse; techniques of detection of communicable disease.
Must have the ability to instruct residents on personal health and safety issues.
Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
Must have the ability to communicate in English both orally and in writing.
Must have the ability to make critical decisions regarding the physical conditions of new resident intakes.

Must pass a background investigation.
Must have a current certification in CPR.
Must have a valid New Mexico driver's license by employment date and retain a valid NM driver's license while employed in this position .
Working Conditions
Duties are performed indoors in a temperature-controlled environment.
Duties are performed on an even, usually dry surface, which may be concrete, tile, or carpet.
Work hazards include handling of medical wastes, culture side products, blood or body wastes, and/or other pathogenic materials; possibility of personal injury from violent residents.
Duties are performed in a locked facility.
Employee may be required to do shift work.
Equipment, Tools and Materials
Utilizes diagnostic and medical laboratory equipment in performance of duties, such as stethoscope, ophtha! lmoscope, otoscope, microscope, centrifuge, incubator and sterilization equipment; rubber gloves, radio, and keys required to function in a locked facility.
Materials and products handled include various medications and medical supplies, medical forms and office supplies .

Must be able to work in a variety of positions, including crouching and kneeling on an occasional basis.
Must be able to assist in the physical restraint of residents as needed.
Must be able to lift from floor to waist up to 10 pounds frequently, up to 30 pounds occasionally.
Must be able to bend at the waist and twist/rotate waist as needed on a frequent basis.
Must be able to use ! hands and fingers to grasp/manipulate equipment, materials, and residents, in a bilaterally coordinated manner in performing essential duties.
Must be able to react quickly to unpredictable situations with residents, which may require rapid or heavy physical exertion.
