Job Summary
DEFINITION
:
Plans, assigns, trains, and supervises Motor Coach Cleaners responsible for cleaning and servicing Transportation Department buses and service vehicles.
SUPERVISION :
Works under administrative supervision of the Transit Vehicle Maintenance Superintendent who assigns work and periodically reviews completed work. Exercises technical supervision over Motor Coach Cleaners, and as-needed staff, providing detailed work assignments and reviewing work in progress.
Plans, assigns, trains, and supervises Motor Coach Cleaners responsible for cleaning and servicing Transportation Department buses and service vehicles.
SUPERVISION :
Works under administrative supervision of the Transit Vehicle Maintenance Superintendent who assigns work and periodically reviews completed work. Exercises technical supervision over Motor Coach Cleaners, and as-needed staff, providing detailed work assignments and reviewing work in progress.
Representative Duties
Plans, trains, schedules and supervises the service of transit buses by Motor Coach Cleaners, including the cleaning of buses, vaulting of fareboxes, storage of lost-and-found items, and fueling of natural gas and battery electric buses.
Responds to alarms in the gas detection, fire detection, and fueling systems and works with Transit Mechanic Supervisors and the Transit Vehicle Maintenance Superintendent to address alarms. Monitors electric bus charging systems and reports any malfunctions to the Transit Vehicle Maintenance Superintendent.
Supervises the daily cleaning and routine servicing of transit buses and non-revenue vehicles.
Schedules, oversees, and inspects work performed by contractors and enforces compliance with contractual requirements.
Implements comprehensive quality control inspection procedure for transit buses to ensure the highest standard of maintenance. Investigates and assists in resolving complaints regarding services. Reports damaged or malfunctioning buses.
Utilizes an advanced fleet management system and yard management system to monitor transit bus parking, fueling, and cleaning operations. Monitors pull-in of electric buses and plans fueling to ensure buses are available for morning pull-out. Performs nightly bus fleet inventory.
Tests new cleaning products and related items and makes recommendations based on these tests. Estimates and orders cleaning supplies, materials, and equipment needed to maintain cleaning services.
Establishes and revises employees’ work schedules for the most effective means of completing necessary tasks. Approves work, vacation schedules, and sick leave usage.
Evaluates employees' work performance and conducts, and prepares performance evaluations. Makes hiring, promotional and disciplinary recommendations in consultation with supervisor.
Ensures that employees are trained in appropriate work methods, safety practices involving tools and equipment, and on hazardous waste handling. Ensures that all applicable federal, State, local, and departmental rules, regulations, and procedures are followed.
Checks lighting, plumbing, fueling equipment, and related facilities and reports malfunctions.
Prepares reports and maintains accurate records on training, payroll records, accident reports and investigations, and vacation schedules.
Follows all applicable safety rules and regulations.
Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education: Graduation from high school or equivalent.
Experience: Three years of related experience coordinating the routine servicing and cleaning operation of a fleet of buses/trucks and/or heavy equipment. At least two years of experience must have included supervisory responsibilities.
One year of leading and coordinating the work of others and successful completion of the City of Santa Monica’s Pre-Supervisory Academy may substitute for the two years of supervisory experience. Municipal experience is desirable.
Licenses and Certificates: Possession of a valid Class B driver license.
WORKING CONDITIONS :
Work is regularly performed both inside and outside in seasonal climate and weather conditions. The position may require availability to work weekends, evenings, holidays, on-call and overtime. An employee in the position must be available to respond to emergency cleaning requests and must have physical strength and agility to lift and carry heavy objects weighing up to 85 pounds. Bending, stooping, lifting, squatting and climbing is also required.
